How Wedding Dance Lessons Work in NYC Everything You Want to Know Before You Book
Step One: The Conversation Before the Lesson
Before anything else, we talk. You'll call or text Peter directly at 917-375-3027, or reach out through the contact form. This isn't a sales call — it's a genuine five-minute conversation to understand where you are, what your song is, and what you're hoping to feel on the dance floor.
A few things that typically come up:
- Do you have a song chosen, or are you still deciding?
- Is one of you more confident than the other?
- How much time do you have before the wedding?
- Are you thinking simple and comfortable, or full choreography?
None of these have wrong answers. The whole point of the call is to arrive at your first lesson with a plan that fits your actual situation — not a generic package.

Step Two: Choosing Your Song
If you haven't chosen a first dance song yet, that's completely fine — it's one of the first things we sort out together. Song choice shapes everything: the dance style, the tempo, the emotional tone, and how your choreography is structured.
A few things worth knowing before you decide:
- Song length matters. Most couples edit their song to 2–2.5 minutes. A full 3.5-minute version is a long time to be on the floor, and a tight edit almost always feels better on the day.
- Tempo determines style. A slow waltz, an upbeat swing, a romantic rumba — the right dance style comes from the music, not the other way around. Peter will listen to your song and tell you what will work best and why.
- You don't need a "danceable" song. Nearly any song can be worked with. Couples have danced beautifully to songs that seemed impossible on paper. Don't rule out a meaningful song because you're worried it won't translate.
Step Three: Your First Lesson
Your first lesson is 45 minutes, held at the studio on West 37th Street in Midtown Manhattan.
Here's what actually happens in that first session:
You'll start with posture, hold, and how to move together — the fundamentals that make everything else possible. Peter will introduce 2–3 foundational movements suited to your song and your starting point. By the end of the lesson, you'll have a clear sense of what your dance could look and feel like, and a concrete plan for how to get there.
Most couples leave the first lesson surprised — both by how much they accomplished and by how relaxed the whole experience felt. The studio is a shared space, which means there may be real-world distractions, but lessons are always unhurried and focused entirely on the two of you.
The first lesson is $89 (discounted from the standard rate when booked and paid in advance).
Step Four: The Lesson Arc — What Happens Over Time
Wedding dance lessons aren't a fixed program — they're a flexible process shaped around your timeline, your goals, and how quickly you both feel comfortable. That said, here's a typical arc:
- Lessons 1–2: Foundation. Posture, frame, basic footwork, how to move together without stepping on each other. The goal is to feel physically comfortable as a dancing couple.
- Lessons 3–5: Your Dance Takes Shape. Movements are added, sequenced, and connected to specific moments in your song. You start to feel something that resembles a real first dance.
- Lessons 6–8: Confidence and Flow. Refinement. The technical work fades into the background, and what emerges is connection — the feeling that you're dancing, not performing.
- Lessons 9–12 (full choreography). Every transition, every musical highlight, every detail is locked in and owned. At this stage, couples stop thinking about the steps entirely.
Most couples reach a point they're genuinely proud of in 5–7 lessons. Full choreography for a 2.5–3 minute song typically takes 8–12.

Common Questions From Couples Just Getting Started
We've never danced together. Where does that put us?
Exactly where the majority of couples who come to us start. No dance background is assumed or required. The only thing that matters is that you're willing to show up.
What if we disagree on the song?
More common than you'd think — and Peter's navigated it many times. Bring both options to the first lesson and he'll help you hear them differently.
Can we take lessons on weekends?
Yes. The studio offers evening and weekend availability. Check the current calendar for open slots or call to discuss scheduling.
What's the difference between lessons and choreography?
Lessons build comfort and a personal first dance that feels natural. Choreography is a fully designed, structured routine — specific movements timed to specific moments in your music. Most couples end up somewhere on the spectrum between the two. See the wedding dance choreography page for more detail.
Is this right for us if one person is significantly more nervous than the other?
Yes — and it's one of the most common dynamics in the studio. The work is always calibrated to the less confident partner first. A couple is only as comfortable as its most anxious dancer.
